Winter 2019

This brilliant silence of winter is most touching,
might I not say musical?
How different it is from that of a starry night in June,
which in mute eloquence proclaims repose!
In this is power, an appeal to thought,
strangely mingled with one to active energy.

Henry James Slack (1818-1896), 'The Ministry of the Beautiful'

Goldfish Myths

Myth 1:
It's fine to keep goldfish in small bowls
While goldfish can survive in cramped conditions, it's not good for them. To live to their full lifespan and size (they can reach 45 cm) they need properly aerated, treated and filtered water.

Myth 2:
Goldfish only live for a couple of years
The average lifespan of a captive goldfish is 5 to 10 years, and if they're carefully looked after they can live well into their 30s and 40s.

Myth 3:
Each variety of goldfish is a different species
All goldfish are the same species, Carassius auratus, a type of carp originally from East Asia that's been selectively bred for hundreds of years.

Food for Thought

As for the search for truth,
I know from my own painfull searching,
with its many blind alleys,
how hard it is to take a reliable step, be it ever so small,
towards the understanding of that which is truly significant.

Albert Einstein

The question isn't who is going to let me;
